Houseplants and Home Air Quality

Research has shown that the air quality in our homes is worse than the air outside.

Over the course of our lives, we spend more time in our homes than anywhere else. Because of this, we have come to invest a lot of money in making our homes centers of relaxation and entertainment. But what about health? Are we ensuring that our homes are Wellness Homes?

Research has shown that the air quality in our homes is worse than the air outside. One inexpensive way to improve your home's air quality is simply by improving ventilation. Another great way is through the use of houseplants! Certain types of plant will actually absorb airborne particles and gases that can aggravate allergies or worse (carbon monoxide, for example, can be fatal in excessive doses). Plants also enrich the air with oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis.

Spider plants, philodendrons, chrysanthemums, and aloe vera are among the more common houseplants that have been scientifically proven to improve air quality. In case of burns, aloe vera is also good to have on hand (pun intended). One plant can help clean the air of a 10' x 10' room.

Research into the purification properties of many plants has been conducted by NASA. As a handy reference, complete with attractive photographs to help match plants to your decor, check out the book How to Grow Fresh Air by B.C. Wolverton, available at Amazon.com for under $12.
