Sleep, Part I

"Healthy sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important determinant in predicting longevity -- more influential than diet, exercise, or heredity." -- William Dement, M.D., Ph.D.

Every week, new reports pop up in magazines, newspapers, medical journals and on TV about the critical importance of sleep to our daily wellbeing and our long-term health. They alert us to a worsening epidemic of sleep deprivation in our stressful, modern day society.

Might you have a sleep disorder? Answering yes to any of the questions below may indicate the presence of sleep deprivation or a sleep debt.

  • Do you fall asleep within 5 minutes of going to bed? Does it take more than 20 minutes?
  • Do you fall asleep while reading or watching TV?
  • Do you use alcohol to try to fall asleep?
  • Do you often wake up in the middle of the night?
  • Do you have trouble getting up in the morning?
  • Do you feel drowsy when driving? Have you dozed off while driving?
  • Do you have low energy or bouts of low energy?
  • Do you have difficulty with concentration, problem-solving or creativity?

Sleep is the body state reserved for repair and regeneration! Consequently, poor sleep has a host of negative effects on physical and mental health. The price can be surprisingly high. Take a look at this partial list:

  • Reduced energy
  • Reduced work and athletic performance
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Poor mood affecting self-esteem, work and personal relationships
  • Greater risk of accidents (50% of motor vehicle deaths are related to sleep deprivation)
  • Intensified discomfort
  • Weakened immune system (one bad night can equal a 60% reduction in effectiveness)
  • Reduced longevity! (proper sleep is widely considered the #1 determinant of health and longevity)

For a sampling of the benefits of proper sleep, consider the opposites of the points above! Other benefits include a healthier heart and reduced stress (stress has been linked to higher risk of heart attack, cancer and stroke).

Thankfully, modern science combined with ancient wisdom has provided us with some remarkable solutions to naturally induce the deep, restorative sleep that is so critical. I promised solutions, right? Well, to wrap up National Sleep Awareness Week, I will be sending you a special issue with tips for sleeping better and the best that the marriage of modern science and ancient wisdom has to offer! Stay tuned for Part II!
